Soon as the noise became constant I backed up to an external drive. I still dream of the pure quiet of an SSD, but this is fantastic if it holds. If this sticks, and for the last few minutes its been peaceful bliss, I owe you a few pints molitors. On the weekend I was calling up stores, and was about to spend $300 ! Applecare didn't have a clue either. I recently upgraded to Panic Transmit 4 and it appears to be the culprit ! I quit it and my drive is back to normal.Ĭraziness. I tried opensnoop and like clockwork every couple of seconds this would output :ĥ01 491 ubd 33 /Users//Library/Mobile Documents/VE9FD499U5~com~panic~Transmit/Favorites/Favorites.sqliteĥ01 491 ubd 22 /Users//Library/Mobile Documents/VE9FD499U5~com~panic~Transmit/Favorites/Favorites.sqliteĥ01 2872 mdworker 4 /Users//Library/Mobile Documents/VE9FD499U5~com~panic~Transmit/Favorites/Favorites.sqlite I sit about 2.5 feet from my iMac, it was loud enough to easily hear and constant, constant, constant. I've also tried turning off most of Spotlight index, which kind of sucks since I use it as my launcher. So i've previously tried fs_usage, ran disk utility repair several times, and SmartReporter (thx for link) says the disk is fine. Since I couldn't physically lift and take apart a 27" iMac, I ended up daisy chaining two LaCie drives: booting of one as my primary drive and the second as my backup. The 27inch iMac, when the hard drive failed, and obviously it had to happen two days after I returned home from having spinal surgery. I replaced the hard drive in my 24inch iMac when it failed and found out how expensive it was going to pay Apple to replace my hard drive. I usually wait till absolute failure because I like living on the edge, and also, it doesn't really take that long for a drive at that stage to completely fail.Įither way, I'm betting in a week or two I'm betting we're gonna get a new post about how expensive Apple Care is (without warranty) to replace a hard drive. Which is why I tried to describe the sound in my post as, 'chh chh chh' as best as I could, but if it is that sound, the hard drive is failing. The key words for me were repetitive and loud. If the drive sound is getting repetitive and is loud enough to drive someone nuts, than it means something is wrong with the drive. Apple's really good at keeping a low sound profile for their macs.
